Making DIY Liquid Laundry Soap

Okay, so… I’ve been kind of busy with life and have only really been doing much with pages here. Ironic, given that this is the only place in the world where I’ve done anything much with pages. Now, I guess it’s time I kind of put my bloggy little footprint here.

Yesterday I decided to take my mom’s advice and try to make my first batch of DIY laundry detergent.

  1. I’m trying to cut waste as much as humanly possible and…
  2. I’m trying to cut costs as much as I can.

Being hold up in the hose with the safe at home deal with Covid-19 and adding in the fact that we are now on Hospice… I have decided (finally?) that I need to really start to take control of costs and of my life.

About a week ago, mom asked if I had ever made DIY laundry detergent. She said that it is dirt ass easy and way cheaper. Have to confess that I had actually read up some on making it before but most places that have the “recipe” for it say a box of borax and a box of laundry soda and a bar of fels-naptha soap. Borax is $5 a box… soda is $5 a box. That isn’t a whole lot cheaper (if you actually…. you know… had to use the whole box) than cheap detergent. But you don’t use the whole box. You use 2 cups of each. That means that each box will make at least 2 batches or maybe more. First batch is a bit more expensive because you have to buy the ingredients but the next couple batches are going to be nearly free.

So, I ventured forth to buy the stuff to make it. It was hard to find the Borax because a lot of places were out of it. Kind of wonder if maybe that is because of the pandemic deal and so many people being unemployed. Zote was also nearly sold out. I’m wondering how many of my neighbors are making their own detergent…

Yesterday, I sucked it up and made my first batch.

I have to admit I was dubious.

Is it going to be a huge pain in the butt

Am I going to waste the money for the ingredients and end up throwing away a mess

Turns out it wasn’t nearly as bad as I figured it would be.

It took a while stirring down the soap ribbons until they were all melted. It said about 10 minutes. I know it was closer to 20 (didn’t actually time it) but it felt like a year. You want to talk about a watched pot never boiling? Man, try watching (and stirring constantly) soap dissolve.

But I am pleased with the results.

I haven’t actually done a load yet. It just finished setting up this morning. But if the smell and consistency are anything to go by, it was a success.
