Wands

When people think of witches, they typically think of wands (and cauldrons and brooms). Let’s face it, Hermiony Granger in Harry Potter was a powerful witch in the story and she had a wand. If you follow the story line in that series, the wand finds the witch.

But… that really doesn’t explain anything. It doesn’t explain what the wand is or what it does.

A quick search can show you some beautiful wands for sale. I’ve seen some stunning ones at Pagan Pride festivals, on Etsy, on witch store sites and in metaphysical shops. You can pay $5 or $500 for a wand. Is a $500 wand really better than a $5 one? Is a $5 one better than a free one? How do you find your wand and connect to it?

Witchcraft has become big business. You can sink a metric crap ton of money in pursuit of your craft. But do you really really have to?

no

no you don’t

A wand is nothing more or less than a way to direct your intention… you magic… your thoughts and spells. Think of it as a flashlight. You point a flashlight at what you want to see and it illuminates its field. You can narrow the beam or widen the beam. Sometimes, on a flashlight, you can do that on the flashlight itself by turning or twisting pieces and parts. Always you can do that by getting closer or further away from what you are looking at/for. You can use the flashlight to help you see. It doesn’t make you see, only aids when it is dark.

So it is with your wand. You are the intention. You are the magic. Your wand is nothing more or less than a way to help direct it.

My wand is likely not much like your wand… and yours is not likely much like your friend’s wand.

Ah, but this still all speaks to having to buy a wand?

No. There is no need to go out shopping for a wand. If you happen to be somewhere where there are wands and one calls out to you, there is no shame to buy it and make it your own. But… what makes for a wand?

What speaks to you?

Kitchen witch? Maybe a spoon? That might be one of the best ways to direct your intention. It will always be at hand. You will likely be mostly bonded with it already anyway. I found one at Giant Eagle that I fell in love with. I use it to make my pots of coffee. It’s long enough to reach the bottom of the bag of one of the yummy coffees I’ve gotten… and it just feels right…

Do crochet or knitting? Have a favorite tool? Yeah, me too. I love my turtle hook and I carry it with me even when I don’t need it to crochet anything.

Do you have a favorite pen?

Have you been remodeling a house or scavenging in deserted buildings? Maybe there is a chunk of something wood that would carve (whittle) down to make a comfortable wand shaped wand.

You can draw siglis with a pen… or with a knife… or with… whatever… including with oil or water into the wand.

none of these speak to you?

A stone?

A stick?

Your finger?

Whatever you can point can be used as a wand, to direct your intention.

Being a witch doesn’t have to be expensive.

Being a witch is a very personal adventure. Your tools should be as personal as your adventure is.
